As the autumn equinox approaches, so does the opportunity to look to the changing season to discover what nature can teach us about nurturing ourselves. Autumn symbolizes change, a reminder that life is in a constant state of transition. Similarly, we can use this season as an opportunity to shed what no longer serves us and prepare for a period of introspection and growth.
If we look at the trees we see time and again the branches fearlessly let go of the dead leaves knowing that this process is necessary to make way for new growth in seasons to come. There may be habits, thoughts, work, or relationships that we cling to that no longer serve us. As we release our hold from these, we open space for new life to bloom. Whether we are releasing with a sense of hope, fear of the unknown, or a little bit of both; we can find solace and rejuvenation by connecting with ourselves through self-care and healthy boundaries.
Nurturing ourselves through self care helps provide us with strength and resilience to navigate life’s changes. Here are some ways to integrate self-care into your autumn routine:
Mindful Reflection: Autumn’s slower pace encourages us to reflect on our lives and recognize the preciousness of now. Pause and practice present moment awareness by tapping into each of your senses (see, hear, touch, taste, smell) and take in the sensory experience of the moment you are in.
Outdoor Connection: Don’t let the cooler weather deter you from spending time outdoors. Nature can be a powerful healer. Take long walks in the crisp air, surrounded by the changing colors of the leaves.
Self Compassion: Be gentle with yourself, acknowledging that transitions can be challenging. Let the waning daylight be an invitation to draw you into deeper, more vulnerable parts of yourself.
Just as the falling leaves create a protective blanket for the earth, setting boundaries creates a protective space for your well-being. Here is what Autumn teaches us about boundaries:
Recognizing Energy Levels: The energy of Autumn is a natural downshift from the high vibration of summer. With the days getting shorter, its crucial to pay attention to your energy levels. Know when to say no to commitments that drain you and prioritize those that align with your well-being.
Embracing Impermanence: Autumn’s falling leaves remind us of the impermanence of life. Letting go of what no longer serves you is part of the cycle of renewal. Often we must release in order to receive. This process can be liberating. Set boundaries with relationships, habits, or work that’s no longer fulfilling.
Self-Preservation: Just as animals gather resources for winter, set boundaries that protect your mental and emotional resources. This might mean limiting exposure to negative news or people who drain your energy.
In the process of composting the dead leaves that fall and decay become the food for new life. When we set new boundaries we can practice forgiving ourselves with a thankful heart even for the toxic situations we may have held onto longer than we would have liked. We can take what we have learned from our experiences, retain what is useful to us and expel what is not.
Whether anticipating a major life transition or going with the flow of life, navigating change can be challenging. Nurturing ourselves through self care and healthy boundaries takes practice. Therapy is a supportive space to learn and hone these skills.
