Melanie Goetz, M.A., Associate MFT
Welcome! I’m glad you found your way to Good Therapy San Diego, and to my page here. I’m Melanie Goetz. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a minor in Leadership, and my Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling. I am currently completing my Masters of Arts in Christian Apologetics. Additionally, I studied abroad at Florence University of Arts and University of Nicosia.
I have worked with children and adolescents in church, school, camp, and clinical settings—including a community center, in-home services, and at a juvenile detention center. I have experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis as a Registered Behavioral Technician serving families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am trained in EMDR, a technique used to help individuals rewrite their trauma narratives in a way which serves their present and future, releasing them from the captivity of their past. I integrate Play Therapy and Sandtray Therapy with
Trust-Based Relational Intervention-- a model derived from working with foster-adopted kids—to help families of children who have
experienced trauma. My heart is for empowering families to communicate and connect with one another. I believe there is no such thing as bad behavior, only misdirected efforts of communicating needs. In addition, I am advanced trained in Gottman Couples therapy. Through Gottman Method Couples Therapy, parenting couples are able to build friendship and practice healthy communication skills that strengthen their ability to recognize the communication efforts of their children. In my work with children and adolescents, we’ll work on practicing healthy alternatives to expressing and meeting their needs.
As a holistic counselor, I view the whole person—spiritual, social, mental, physical, and emotional. My therapy is client led, meaning that I believe that it is my job to help you discover or reaffirm your own values and goals to shape a life that is meaningful and fulfilling to you. In treatment with me, each part of the person is integrated on a healing journey towards meeting one's goals. My work focuses on strengthening the individual's sense of their true self in order to strengthen their intimacy and connection with themselves and with others. I am fascinated by the human brain, and, how our bodies and mind are built to protect us from danger. I hope the counseling room can be a safe place for you to explore your history, how it’s impacted you, and how therapy can reshape its mark as you move towards your thriving self. I view the counseling relationship as a partnership to form the best roadmap for your healing needs. Ultimately, the empowered client leads the direction and pace of the healing work.
